I thought of that title last night and i couldn't get it out of my head. I kinda hate it. But like a nasty fungus it just won't go away. So here you go, an October feature in which the happenings and not-so happenings of post season baseball will be reviewed.
As any Met fan knows, yesterday started as the worst day ever and then got a little better in the afternoon. Many like myself look to this afternoon and evening for further light on the horizon. Yes the Mets may not be where their talents should have carried them, but at the very least, we can watch the yankees and phillies lose like only they can. I know the yankees haven't actually lost yet, but i need a little something to be hopeful for.
The Phillies did lose yesterday and that was awesome. Those feared philly sluggers? 2 solo home runs. The Colorodo Rockies? THE ROCKIES. Who had Kaz Matsui batting leadoff! (I didn't get to see was he wearing purple wristbands?) Well anyway the rockies had a homerun, a triple by todd helton, a double, a single and a walked in run. Oh that was beautiful. If i had the money i'd go get a full Rockie uniform and wear it every day for the rest of this series.
God bless them. And Kaz Matsui.
Here's what i think happened. Remember around June when the Mets hit a little slide and their lead wasn't that great, only 3 or 4 games. And everyone was amazed that neither the Braves or the Phils could gain any ground and take advantage of the Mets slide. Right around then Carlos Beltran must have looked at Shawn Green and said, "hey, we better step it up or else Kaz Matsui is going to facing down the Phillies for the first pitch of october baseball this year."
And OOOooooh how they laughed. And they told Reyes and he laughed. And the told Wright and he chuckled. Delgado told Glavine. Glavine told Peterson. Peterson told Pedro. Pedro danced around the club house singing improvised ditties about Kaz and the Rockie's lineup. And the entire bullpen would just sit up there and put each other in stitches pretending to be Matsui checking his wrist bands as Brett Meyers took the mound.
I figure they stopped laughing about a week ago, but by then it was too late.
I also watched the entire Cubs/Arizona game (kinda... a good Law and Order was on). And wow, those two teams play baseball. I had a ball watchign that game and my hero Ron Darling was in the booth. Ron Darling flashback!:::
Thanks Ron. You're great.
I did find it interesting that the Cubs played small ball and Arizona played the long ball. I kinda expected the exact opposite. I was sad to see cliff floyd miss a few big opportunities but he did make some great catches in the field. Carlos Zambrano does seem to be a little crazy tho. That guy isn't having fun. He's a good pitcher, and a good hitter. Sit back and enjoy for a few minutes and then maybe you'll get some wins too.
All in all my kudos to both Arizona and Chicago. Two great teams and I'm going to enjoy watching this series, and I can honestly say I'll be rooting for both of you.
Thats baseball from Wednesday. Stay tuned for Thursday.
